UW Punts on New Generation Science Standards

CASPER, Wyo. (AP)  University of Wyoming trustees aren't taking a position on a set of K-12 science education standards that have been rejected by the Legislature and Gov. Matt Mead.

Trustees and state lawmakers meeting in Casper heard a presentation on the Next Generation Science Standards on Thursday. The Casper Star-Tribune reports the trustees didn't take any action on the issue.

Trustee Dave True called the standards "a fairly hot potato."

Last winter, the Legislature passed and Mead signed a budget bill with a provision rejecting the standards. Some don't like how the standards endorsed the theory of man-made climate change. Others oppose how the standards endorse the theory of biological evolution.

The state Board of Education recently voted to halt the development of new science standards until the politics cool down.
