Man Facing 9 Criminal Charges After Hit and Run and Hospital Theft

A man who fled the scene of a head on crash on Monday is facing nine different charges.

Officers were called to the area of 13th and SW Wyoming Blvd. for a report of a head on crash with injuries. After arriving on scene officers were told that one of the vehicles had fled the accident after losing a tire.

A police officer on his way to the scene identified a pickup truck that was missing the left front tire and was riding on its axle- causing smoke and sparks.

The truck refused to pull over, but eventually came to rest near the baseball fields on 13th Street.

The driver, 30-year-old Thomas Sternberg, refused to exit the vehicle. Officers then had to pull him out of the pickup and place him in handcuffs. Sternberg told officers that he had consumed two pints of whiskey prior to the accident.

He was transported to Wyoming Medical Center and charged with driving while under the influence, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, improper registration, no insurance, no seat-belt, eluding police and interference.

At the hospital, Sternberg was also accused of stealing more than $1,000 worth of drugs from a hospital cart. He faces a charge of felony larceny in that case.

After being discharged from the hospital, Sternberg was transported to the Natrona County Detention Center.
