New Fire Reported in SE Wyoming, Estimated at 5,800 Acres
A new fire burning in southeastern Wyoming has prompted responses from firefighters in multiple counties as high winds spur its growth.
The fire, located west of Wheatland, has been called both the Green Mountain Fire by Goshen County Emergency Management and the Britania Fire by the Natrona County Fire District. The fire was estimated at 5,700-5,800 acres in size Sunday afternoon.
According to the Torrington Volunteer Fire Department, the fire is burning on the Medicine Bow National Forest near Palmer Canyon in Albany County. The blaze may have moved into Platte County, potentially crossing the National Forest boundary.
Winds were reported at 35 mph Sunday afternoon, gusting to 65 mph, with relative humidity below 15 percent -- such conditions will make containment and suppression of the fire more difficult.
The Natrona County Fire District sent Brush 7-4, comprised of three firefighters, to the blaze. Goshen County Emergency Management reported that the county has sent a strike team and tender as of Sunday evening.
Further details were not immediately available.
