A Casper man accused of beating and sexually assaulting another man last month denied the felony charges brought against him Wednesday morning in Natrona County District Court.

Gary Daniel Clement pleaded not guilty to one count each of first-degree sexual assault and aggravated assault. He could face five to 60 years imprisonment if convicted on both counts.

During a half-hour preliminary hearing last month, Detective Anthony Stedillie of the Casper Police Department said he was called to Wyoming Medical Center on the afternoon of Feb. 1 after the alleged victim reported being sexually assaulted by Clement.

According to charging papers, the victim encountered Clement in the early morning hours of Feb. 1 at a local restaurant where Clement worked. The victim told police that Clement was an "old friend," and the two had not seen each other in a few years.

Stedillie said at the preliminary hearing that the victim and Clement knew each other while they were incarcerated at the Natrona County Juvenile Detention Center.

At the restaurant, Clement invited the victim back to Clement's residence for a drink. The victim accepted the invitation and the two left the restaurant at about 6 a.m.

Once at Clement's house on East 17th Street, the two drank beer, played video games and "practiced defense tactics," the victim told police.

Stedillie said at last month's hearing that the two smoked marijuana and started to "practice fighting techniques."

Then, Clement allegedly told the victim that people wanted the victim dead. Clement allegedly said he would kill the victim unless the victim performed oral sex on Clement.

The victim reportedly submitted. Clement allegedly punched him in the head and threatened the victim with a knife.

At one point, the knife was allegedly near the victim's neck. The victim tried to block the knife, resulting in a puncture wound to the victim's hand.

After being hit in the head, court documents say, the victim briefly lost consciousness and Clement pulled down the victim's pants.

Clement then allegedly raped the victim while holding the knife. The victim tried to fight Clement off, but was overpowered.

According to the affidavit, Clement stopped the alleged rape because Clement was getting repeated calls from his tattoo artist. Clement allegedly told the victim that the victim would need to use the navigation feature on his phone to help Clement find his tattoo artist's house.

Clement allegedly made the victim get into Clement's vehicle, and they both went to the tattoo artist's house. While using the navigation feature, the victim was able to contact a friend to pick him up from the tattoo artist's address.

The victim told police that his white button-up shirt had been left in Clement's bedroom.

Clement, when contacted by the detective, reportedly denied any sexual assault or any sexual contact within the previous 24 hours.

A sexual assault nurse examiner attempted to collect biological evidence from the victim. The nurse examiner noted bruising on the victim.

Clement was taken to the Casper Police Department and was held by an officer until officers could execute a search warrant at Clement's house.

As a result of the search, officers collected a black-handled kitchen knife, a white-handled switch-blade knife, a white button-up shirt, bedspread with suspected blood staining, a sheet with suspected blood staining, a shirt with suspected blood staining and a black iPhone.

The tattoo artist later told police that Clement had come to his residence to get a tattoo earlier that day. The tattoo artist said Clement had another male with him, but the artist didn't know the other man.

Clement remains jailed on $50,000 cash or surety bond pending trial.
