Interstate 80, which was closed between Cheyenne and Rawlins early Wednesday due to winter conditions, is expected to remain closed to all traffic overnight into Thursday.

In a statement Wednesday, WYDOT said the nature of the storm will cause that stretch of interstate to stay closed for a prolonged period.

The stretch between Cheyenne and Laramie was first closed due to a power line fire near Buford. That fire was dealt with, but subsequent crashes and deteriorating weather kept the road closed.

I-80 eastbound between Rock Spring and Rawlins was also closed.

Heavy snow is expected to continue throughout the day, with whiteout conditions in some areas along with large snow drifts.
