Prosecutors Will Not Seek Death Penalty Against Samuel Renner

An Evansville man charged with first-degree murder won't face the death-penalty if convicted.

Prosecutors with the Natrona County District Attorney's Office, say they will not seek the death penalty for 21-year-old Samuel Renner, who has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, seven counts of aggravated assault, and two counts of possession of a deadly weapon.

Investigators say in late July, Renner was drinking at Taylor’s Sports Bar in Evansville, and when he left, he got into a fight with another patron..

Investigators say Renner went home and got two guns, and returned to the bar, where he fatally shot 41-year old Todd Callies.

Callies and his friends were walking out of the bar, when they saw Renner pointing a gun at someone.

The group then attempted to disarm Renner, and during the scuffle, three shots were fired….the last two, ended up hitting Callies on the left side of his upper chest.

Renner is being held without bond awaiting trial and could now face life in prison on the first-degree murder charge if convicted.
