Natrona County Sheriff’s Office Again Warns Of Telephone Scam
And although it's been said many times, many ways, the Natrona County Sheriff's Office again reminds people to not fall for a phone scam that again is making the rounds.
It works like this: Some unknown person portrays himself to be a lieutenant with the Sheriff's Office, calls area residents, tells them they've missed a court date and a warrant has been issued for their arrest, according to a news release.
The scammer then tells the residents they can take care of the warrant for a nominal fee, and gives directions how to send money.
"Please be advised that this is a SCAM and staff with the Natrona County Sheriff’s do not call and request funds or money be paid to avoid an arrest warrant," according to the news release.
The suspect also may have used the phone number for the Sheriff’s Office by an illegal practice called "spoofing," according to the news release.
"Spoofing" is a technique often used by scammers to trick people into believing -- through their phone's caller ID function -- they are receiving a legitimate call from a legitimate source, in this case the Natrona County Sheriff's Office.
Do not send money or funds to the suspected scammer, or give any other personal information.
