LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — A man has been sentenced to prison for choking a woman in Wyoming after previously being deported from the U.S. for a violent felony conviction.

34-year-old Jesus Antonio Gomez pleaded no contest to the felony strangulation charge in May. He was sentenced Tuesday to three to five years in prison.

District Court Judge Jeffrey Donnell noted that Gomez has five pages of criminal history and recommended that he be placed in an intensive treatment unit.

Defense Attorney Candace Pisciotti had requested a shorter prison term for Gomez. She said he has a severe drug problem and has held himself accountable for his actions.

Gomez acknowledged the previous deportation but told Donnell he had to come back to the U.S. because his family lives there.
