Yellowstone Grizzly VS Bison – Who Would You Bet On?
The most powerful land animal in North America is the grizzly bear (or brown bear), renowned for its immense muscle mass, 35 mph speed, and ability to break a moose's spine with one swipe. While the American bison is the largest and heaviest mammal (up to 2,000 lbs.), the grizzly holds the top spot for predatory, muscular strength.
A Western grizzly bear is an apex predator with immense physical strength, estimated to be equivalent to 2.5 to 5, or even 6, adult humans. They possess a bite force of up to 1,160 PSI—strong enough to crush bone or a bowling ball—and can flip, move, or destroy 700-pound dumpsters and heavy objects with ease.
In a one-on-one match, who would you bet on?
Freshly awake from his winter nap, this grizzly decided to try its hand, okay, maybe its paws, at taking down a bison.
Both would be on the weak side for this time of year. The bison has had a hard time finding food all winter, and the grizzly has not had a bite to eat during its winter nap. Still, don't think for a moment that you could tangle with either one.
This is not the only video we have of such an encounter. In the video below, a bison chases a grizzly away from the herd.
In the next video, a grizzly latches onto a younger bison and tries to take it down. But, as young as he might be, the bison is still able to turn on the bear and chase it off.
It seems like the bison usually wins these encounters.
But in this case the grizzly does not give up, and the fight continues into the river and downstream. It looks like the younger bison might have lost this one, which is rare, but it does happen.
