Dales, Calkins Have Strong Rounds at Desert Intercollegiate

PALM DESERT, Calif., - The Wyoming Cowboys opened defense of their Cowboy Desert Intercollegiate title on Tuesday with an impressive round of 282 (-6) at the Classic Club in Pam Desert, Calif.
Jimmy Dales and Jaren Calkins lead the Pokes sitting tied for second place, as Wyoming is second in the team standings after the first round.
“It was a good day, and we battled some elements, and the guys are focused,” UW head coach Joe Jensen said. it was just solid for having to battle the weather issues here in California. We have put ourselves in position, but we have two more days. You must be emotionally engaged with the weather that we have coming in and It is important we stay sharp the next two rounds.”
Dales finished his day with an impressive 69 (-3) with four birdies on the day, as he is coming off a strong start to the spring last week in Arizona. Calkins also fired a 69 (-3) on the day for the Brown and Gold. He did his damage on the back going four-under.
Kristoff Panke and Patrick Azevedo shot an even-par 72 for the opening round and are tied for 24th. Panke had the shot of the day knocking in an eagle from 150 yards out on the 16th hole. Azevedo also added an eagle on a long putt on the 18th hole. Davis Seybert shot a 76 (+4) to round out the lineup.
Evan Johnson played as an individual with a 75 (+3) and Noah Wagner also playing as an indy added an 82 (+10).
Grandon Canyon sits in first place with an impressive opening round of 278 (-10). The Cowboys sit in second place with their 282 (-6) followed by UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Fullerton tied for third place at 285 (-3).
The field is led by Gavin O’Neill of Grand Canyon at 68 (-4). Six other players other than Calkins and Dales are tied at 69 (-3) for second place.
The second round continues tomorrow morning with a 10 a.m. MT start.
