City Will Install New Downtown Curb Ramps, Flashing Lights
Construction crews will install curb ramps at intersections in central Casper and will install flashing school zone signs around four schools beginning Monday.
The improvements are intended to make the areas more convenient for walking, according to a news release from the City of Casper's Public Service Department.
Curbs will be modified between West Ninth and West 14th streets, and between South Walnut and South David streets. The improvements will occur at intersections where curb ramps do not exist or do not meet the current standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Small sections of the sidewalks at the intersections will be removed and replaced with accessible ramps commonly known as ADA ramps. The new concrete ramps will be embedded with truncated dome mats.
As part of the project, LED flashing school zone signs will be installed near Park Elementary, Paradise Valley Elementary, Oregon Trail Elementary, and Fort Caspar Academy.
These schools were selected because of high traffic flows on nearby streets. Flashers will be placed on South David Street, West Ninth Street, Robertson Road, Paradise Drive, and West 39th Street.
The City of Casper awarded the $243,325 project to Powder River Construction, Inc.
The city is paying for the project with Transportation Alternative Program funds through the Wyoming Department of Transportation, and city General Fund Reserves allocated to walkability projects.
