A Casper man was killed over the weekend when a commercial truck hit him as he was standing on the shoulder of Interstate 25.

Homer Berry, 82, died just before 3 a.m. Saturday roughly 22 miles south of Buffalo.

Berry was standing outside a parked 2012 Chevy Traverse when he was hit, according to a news release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

The Patrol says Berry hit a deer on I-25 about 18 miles south of where he died. That collision with the deer caused the SUV to become disabled, and it ended up parked on the shoulder of I-25 northbound with part of the driver's side of the SUV parked in the right-hand lane.

A 2012 Freightliner commercial truck towing double trailers hit Berry as he stood outside the SUV, killing him.

The truck driver, 59-year-old Charles Wilson of Billings, Mont., was not injured.

The Patrol is investigating inattention by both Wilson and Berry as contributing factors in the crash. No charges have been filed.

Berry was the 109th person killed on Wyoming highways in 2016. The same time period in 2015 saw 139 highway deaths statewide.
