A trucker was killed early Tuesday morning after jackknifing his rig on Interstate 80, according to the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 1:55 a.m. near milepost 52.5, about 10 miles east of Lyman.

The patrol says 47-year-old Evans, Colorado resident Enrique Lozano Castro was headed west pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with heavy metal piping and I-beams when he began braking due to other crashes in the area, jackknifed to the right, went off the interstate, and came to an abrupt stop.

This caused Castro's load, which was only secured with nylon strapping, to break free and slide into the cab, which did not have a protective headache rack, where it struck Castro, ejecting and killing him.

The patrol says it was snowing and the interstate was icy at the time of the crash.

Equipment failure is being investigated as a possible contributing factor.

This is the 20th fatality on Wyoming's roadways in 2022 compared to 25 in 2021, 19 in 2020, and 39 in 2019 to date.
