New Wyoming Wildfire Burns 1,500 Acres Near Worland, Now 70 Percent Contained
A new wildfire started late Thursday afternoon near Worland, burning over 1,500 acres in a matter of hours.
The Bureau of Land Management's Wyoming office says the fire is 70 percent contained as of roughly 9:30 p.m. The blaze is located some 14 miles east of Worland, and north of U.S. Highway 16.
Firefighters from the BLM and Washakie County responded, as did two single-engine air tankers. The response, the BLM says, was "very effective," and the flames calmed down as night fell.
The fire burned grass and pockets of brush on mostly public land, though some of the scorched acreage was privately owned.
The cause has not yet been determined.
