Liz Cheney Wins GOP Nomination for US House
It has been a hard fought, and at times controversial race to fill the seat of retiring Congresswoman Cynthia Lummis.
But on Primary day, name recognition and a well-funded campaign operation won the day for Liz Cheney, as she will be the Republican candidate for the seat in the fall election.
She will have a Democratic opponent, Ryan Greene, who won his party’s nomination Tuesday, but in overwhelmingly red Wyoming, his path to victory is difficult, to say the least.
Cheney issued this statement late Tuesday night…
“I’m honored by the trust Wyoming Republicans have placed in me to serve as our next Representative in Congress. And I want to thank our tremendous campaign team in every corner of this great state. Thanks to their hard work, tonight we are one step closer to achieving renewed leadership on behalf of our state in Congress.
“I congratulate my opponents for a hard fought contest and for their willingness to step forward in service to our state and nation. We share an abiding love for Wyoming, its traditions and our western values. Now it’s time to look forward, united in our convictions, to defend our constitutional rights and our way of life.
“No state has been hurt more by Barack Obama’s agenda over the past seven-and-a-half years than Wyoming. Hillary Clinton represents a continuation of the same failed policies. Our freedom is under assault from an out-of-control federal government and our security is under threat from radical Islamic terrorism.
“Wyoming needs a strong voice in Congress to lead the effort to undo the devastating policies of the last seven and a half years and restore our freedom. I will be that voice. I will be that leader.”
Her margin of victory was over 15,000 votes.
Leland Christiansen was a distant second in the statewide voting, with State Representative Tim Stubson running third all night.
Local results weren’t posted for almost two hours after polls closed in Natrona County, and we will have another story explaining why they were so late this year.
