In the days before Wyoming was known as the Wyoming Territory, the area was known as the Dakota Territory. In the late 1800's the Territory was split into present day North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and of course Wyoming.

When the territory was being split up and the Wyoming Territory was created in 1868, the government forgot a piece of the territory, known as Lost Dakota.

Yep, there's a small piece of land, about 1/3 the size of Manhattan in New York City,   that should probably belong to Wyoming, but because it was forgotten it's not. The small area is part of Yellowstone National Park, but not many people have ever been there.

Lost Dakota wasn't a part of any state for a long time. The area is known to be thick with bears, wolves, bighorn sheep, moose, elk and bison are thought to call this area home. Other than animals, no one lives there. There are no roads to get there and it's not recommended to try to hike there.

In 1873, Montana decided the area should belong to them, and it was annexed in and is now part of Gallatin County. For reference, Bozeman is the county seat of Gallatin County. If you're a fan of the show Yellowstone, Gallatin County is home to the Yellowstone Ranch.

According to sources, the area has always been a popular location for grizzlies and black bears and that may be the reason that no one wanted it. That reason alone is enough for me not to want to explore it.
