Cheyenne Police Gearing Up For Start Of School Year On Aug. 24

With the school year starting in Laramie County School District#1 on Wednesday, Aug. 24, Cheyenne Police are issuing some safety reminders for the upcoming school year.

That's according to a post on the Cheyenne Police Department Facebook page. The post reminds people to drive safely and follow the traffic rules in school zones.

The post says:

In addition to the SRO’s going back to school, the Cheyenne Police Department will also be increasing traffic enforcement and strictly enforcing school zone safety laws.

Here are a few safety reminders:

Consider allowing extra time for pick-up and drop-off - drive patiently.

Slow down and obey speed limits.

Stop for school buses.

Eliminate distractions while driving.

Keep an eye out for cyclists and pedestrians.

While the post does not specifically mention it, it's noteworthy that drivers who bypass school buses with flashing red lights and a stop sign displayed can be ticketed for those violations if recorded doing so by cameras on the buses.

The registered owner of the car will be ticketed unless they can prove that someone else was driving the vehicle. The tickets typically carry a fine of $435.

Those violations are the only traffic violations for which citations can be issued under Wyoming law solely on the basis of evidence recorded by a video camera. Unlike Colorado and many other states, such evidence can not be used to issue traffic tickets for such things as speeding or running a red light under Wyoming law.
