A man who was arrested on a warrant is accused of trying to sneak methamphetamine into the Natrona County Detention Center.

After his initial arrest, deputies accused 54-year-old Steven Johnson of another crime: possession of methamphetamine, and trying to take it into the jail.

Court documents say Johnson was arrested shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday near the parking lot of the Virginian Hotel. A Casper police officer on patrol recognized Johnson walking down the street.

Johnson was wanted on a warrant for failure to appear, the affidavit says, so the officer stopped him. The warrant was confirmed, and Johnson was taken into custody.

Officers thoroughly searched Johnson, according to the affidavit, and took him to jail without incident.

At the jail, deputies began to search Johnson as part of the booking process.

Johnson was reportedly hesitant to separate his feet during the search.

A deputy told Johnson to separate his feet and lifted Johnson's left pant leg in order to check Johnson's shoes. As the deputy did so, a small plastic bag fell from Johnson's pants into the upper portion of his shoe. The deputy reached for it, and the bag fell onto the floor.

Johnson allegedly tried to kick the bag in order to keep the deputy from getting to it. Court documents say Johnson then stepped on the bag, hiding it with his foot.

The deputy reportedly lifted Johnson's foot and picked up the bag. He then handed it to an officer who recognized the substance inside the bag as methamphetamine, according to the affidavit.

Johnson allegedly said the bag didn't belong to him. An officer told Johnson that the area was monitored by security cameras, and said he would be criminally charged for the methamphetamine.

The deputy believed Johnson had the bag concealed the cheeks of his buttocks and the bag fell when Johnson separated his legs, according to court documents.

The substance tested presumptively positive for methamphetamine, weighing .77 grams.

Johnson was twice previously convicted of possession of a controlled substance: once in California in 1981, and again in Natrona County in 2013, according to court documents.
