Casper police arrested a woman Thursday after officers found a two-year-old child living in a filthy home.

Jessie Marie Hostetler, 22, was booked into jail on recommended charges of child endangerment and misdemeanor marijuana possession. She will likely make her initial appearance in Natrona County District Court at 2 p.m. Friday.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, police officers were called by the Department of Family Services for a home check at a trailer in the 100 Block of North Forest.

The responding officer "immediately could smell feces and the distinct odor of trash and rotting food" as he approached the trailer. The officer "dodged" a large hole in the floor as he entered.

The child was taken into protective custody less than 60 seconds after the officer stepped inside the trailer home. A large amount of dog and cat feces, new and old, was found all over the floor. Police say there had been no attempt made to clean up after the two dogs and three cats living there.

Another hole in the floor was found surrounded by dog feces.

"Along with animal feces, trash, old food, dirty clothing, tools and sharp objects littered the floor tables, end tables and couch," the affidavit states. "Sharp knives and dangerous tools were all over, easily within reach of the [child]."

A "minimal" amount of food was found in the cabinets amongst trash. One bedroom was inaccessible because it was blocked by garbage.

Police allegedly found a small amount of marijuana and a marijuana bowl in plain view, set up to smoke at the edge of a table in front of a chair. A video game was evidently in progress, and Hostetler reportedly almost started playing while authorities were inside the trailer.

Hostetler said she saw no issue with the condition of the home and didn't understand how it could be dangerous for the child.

The child's feet were black, police say. The child had a full diaper and appeared to roam freely throughout the home while Hostetler played video games. The crib was dirty to the point of being unusable.

"By the end of the investigation, officers moved the conversation outside due to the extreme smell," the affidavit states.
