LARAMIE -- The University of Wyoming swimming and diving team closes out its dual-meet season this weekend. The Cowboys and Cowgirls travel to Las Vegas to battle UNLV on Friday and Saturday inside Jim Reitz Pool.

The meet this week will serve as a barometer to where Wyoming sits in relation to one of the best programs in both the Mountain West Conference and Western Athletic Conference. The Lady Rebels placed second at last year’s MW conference championships, while the Rebels are the defending WAC champs.

“It’s a big-time measuring-stick meet for us,” head coach Dave Denniston said. “I think we can prove we are the better swim team, and I think our diving is going to come in huge and do a nice job. We are going to see where we are, and hopefully we can come home with a lot of confidence going into conference.

“That’s the goal, to be as confident as possible at this point in the season.”

Wyoming is currently feeling quite confident after last week’s meet. As a team, it broke seven pool records at Colorado School of Mines with both Carly Palmer and Quinn Cynor logging a pair of pool records.

The meet also includes Hawaii and UC Santa Barbara. Those two schools will somewhat cloud the final results, but Denniston still believes his squad can match up and contend with UNLV.

“UNLV has been a powerhouse in both conferences the last couple of years,” Denniston said. “I think our team can definitely be in a position to beat them this year.”

Friday’s meet begins at 11 a.m. with the first session of diving. Saturday only includes swimming, and it’s slated to commence at 11 a.m.

Following the weekend in Las Vegas, Wyoming will return to the Rocky Mountains and compete at the DU First Chance Meet next weekend. That proceeds the conference championships the two weeks thereafter.
