Wyoming Rep. Cheney Co-Sponsors Federal Abortion Bill
A bill passed Tuesday by the U.S. House of Representatives which proponents say will prevent federal tax dollars from funding abortions saw support from Wyoming's lone seat in the chamber.
Republican Rep. Liz Cheney managed debate on the House floor concerning the rule for consideration of H.R. 7, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2017. She also voted for the bill.
Cheney co-sponsored H.R. 7, which would make permanent the Hyde Amendment barring the use of certain federal funds to pay for abortion in most cases.
"The Hyde Amendment is responsible for saving the lives of at least two million babies, making this policy permanent will save countless more," Cheney said in a statement. "We have a responsibility to stand up and fight for the most vulnerable among us, and I am proud to help lead that effort."
The bill's language specifically prohibits any federal funds from being used to pay for abortions and health benefits that include coverage of abortion.
Also specified are limitations on federal facilities and employees:
No health care service furnished --
(1) by or in any health care facility owned or operated by the Federal Government; or
(2) by any physicians or other individual employed by the Federal Government to provide health care services within the scope of the physician's or individual's employment,
may include abortion.
The measure now goes to the U.S. Senate.
