Wyoming Lawmakers Consider Taxing Electricity Generation
CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — An interim legislative committee will consider a proposal to tax electricity generated in Wyoming.
The Casper Star-Tribune reports that the Joint Revenue Committee last week in Pinedale instructed staff to draft a bill for their consideration at a future meeting. The proposal's details have yet to be ironed out.
Proponents say a production tax on electricity generation could provide a much-needed alternative revenue source for the cash-hungry state.
But the renewed possibility of an electricity tax spawned heated concern among the state's utility companies and independent power producers. Many say the tax would hike costs for consumers or deter renewable energy investment in the state.
