Firefighters in southwestern Wyoming were recently confronted with an unusual situation -- a military truck that caught fire while being transported on a Union Pacific train.

Uinta County Fire Warden Eric Quinney said roughly 10 Bridger Valley firefighters responded to the incident shortly after 8 p.m. on August 19 in Carter.

Quinney said Union Pacific employees made the decision to have the train meet firefighters at a railroad crossing, where three engines and a tanker truck suppressed the burning vehicle within 15-20 minutes.

Damage was limited to the vehicle itself and the railcar on which it was being transported. Although there was some concern that the flames may spread to nearby sagebrush, Quinney said that did not occur.

The cause of the blaze, Quinney told K2 Radio News on Monday, remains under investigation. He said the inquiry is being headed by Union Pacific and the U.S. Department of Defense.

Quinney shared the above video on the Uinta County Fire and Ambulance Facebook page on Sunday. He said that local firefighters have recently begun using helmet cameras, and he thought the video presented a good opportunity to give the public a glimpse into the day-to-day work of a firefighter.

"Just so they can get a better idea just of the view of the firefighter and some of the things they do," Quinney said.
