Hunters, conservationists and state officials are working on plans to boost the Platte Valley mule deer population that has thinned out in recent years.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has been holding public meetings to find possible ways to improve the state's management plan for the deer.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports  the deer are coveted targets by hunters in the southeastern part of the state, but the herd's population has fallen below the state's recommendations.

Game and Fish Habitat Biologist, Grant Frost, says possible ways to protect the deer include conservation easements, sanctuaries or new restrictions on some land use, such as banning off-road vehicles in certain areas.

Game and Fish will develop a set of recommendations that will be presented to the public by late February.
