City officials in Cheyenne propose to use local tax revenue to buy a downtown lot that has been vacant since an arson attack seven years ago.

The fire in late 2004 destroyed an historic building in the heart of downtown Cheyenne. Some Cheyenne residents have been clamoring for the city to put to use the empty space that has become known as "The Hole."

Cheyenne officials propose to buy the property and build a three-story building there. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports  the city would then sell the building for retail, restaurant and office space.

The $7.8 million project would be among several funded by sales tax revenue that would go before voters this summer.
