Snow Dusts Beartooth Pass, August 30, 2026

I know, I know. We are not ready to hear this yet. But here we go.

On August 30, 2026, an early cold front brought 1 to 3 inches of accumulating snow and freezing temperatures to elevations above 10,000 feet on the Beartooth Highway.

Temperatures dropped to around 32°F at the higher elevations. The High-altitude areas saw 1 to 3 inches of fresh snow, creating an unexpected alpine winter landscape. It all happened because a cold low-pressure system moved across the Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains.

Slush and slick spots developed on stretches of US-212 above 10,000 feet.

The highway is open to travel. The roads are dry. Travelers will enjoy that whiteness along the sides of the road as they roam.

There has been a little snow up there this summer. Below is a video shot in June of 2026.

Notice that this was at the highest elevations and only up there. But it is a clue of things that will come. It's also good to hear about snow. We need it.

Wyoming is experiencing a cold front- better call that a cool front, not so cold- that has brought cooler temperatures and near-freezing overnight to parts of Wyoming.

This past weekend, as far down as Cheyenne, had temperatures in the 70's.

This week is the first week of September. Temperatures will pop up a bit, into the 80's for most of the state. But then comes more of that cool weather as we drop down into the 70s again.

As for a fall or winter forecast, don't believe anything you hear. Forecasters really can't tell you what to expect that far out. Any website or internet video telling you otherwise just wants your clicks. They really don't know.
