Cowgirls Make it a 2-0 Weekend Behind Convincing Win Over Idaho

LARAMIE -- The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team made it a 2-for-2 weekend in convincing fashion Saturday as the Cowgirls bested Idaho, 6-2 in a Saturday matinee in Laramie. Wyoming has now won six of its last seven matches and improves to 4-1 at home and 7-4 overall.
The Cowgirls began Saturday just like they have every match during this run, by winning the doubles point. Wyoming swept all three matches of doubles against the Vandals. At No. 1, Violetta Borodina and Sophie Zehender continued to dominate, winning 6-2. Serina Abriola and Noesjka Brink also won 6-2, at the second spot. While rounding things out with a 6-4 victory at No. 3 was Jeselle Ante and Lucia Malinak.
In singles, the Cowgirls took five of six matches and clinched the overall match early. UW had a pair of straight-set victories Saturday, beginning with Zehender at No. 1, winning 6-2 and 6-3. Borodina won her contest 6-3 and 6-2 at the No. 3 position. At four, it was Brink who came out on top as she won in three sets, 6-1, 3-6 and 6-2.
Ante rallied to win at the fifth spot. After dropping the first set 7-5, Ante rebounded to take the second and third sets 6-4 and 6-3, respectively. Malinak, meanwhile, rounded out the singles wins for Wyoming as she won a third set super set, 10-7. Malinak split her first two sets 6-4 and 0-6.
After this weekend’s matches, Brink leads the Cowgirls with seven dual wins this season. A trio of Cowgirls have six wins in Borodina, Malinak and Zehender. Wyoming also improves to 20-8 in dual doubles matchups this season.
Wyoming will look to keep its hot start going next week with a trip to the Blue Grass State. The Cowgirls will play at Western Kentucky Friday, February 23 at 1 p.m., Mountain before taking on Illinois Chicago Saturday, also at 1 p.m., in a neutral contest.
