Chambers Wins the Job as Wyoming’s Starting QB
Redshirt freshman Sean Chambers was named the starting quarterback Thursday after Wyoming football released its depth chart.
The Cowboys’ coaching staff announced the lone spring depth chart after the conclusion of the 15 spring practices UW just went through over previous five weeks. It wrapped up last Saturday with the annual Spring Game.
Chambers played in four games last season and started three. With the new NCAA rule that allows a player to play in up to four games in a season and keep their redshirt season, Chambers is still a redshirt freshman. He worked primarily with the No. 1 offensive unit throughout spring practice.
Chambers was in a battle for the starting position with sophomore Tyler Vander Waal, who played in 10 games and started nine last year.
The rest of the depth chart featured only a few surprises.
Junior Skyler Miller is listed as the starter at fullback going into fall camp. The Torrington native had a good spring and moved ahead of senior Jaylon Watson, who was limited due to an injury.
There were a couple of spots of the depth chart that listed one player or none at all.
Senior Austin Conway was the lone player listed at the “Z” receiver spot and the lone punt returner. Sophomore Keyon Blankenbaker, who was in and out of spring practice, is the lone nickel back/linebacker. There were no returners listed for kick-off returns.
Four positions had an “OR” listed for the starter or backup role, which the coaching staff considers “co-starters.”
Those were at the “F” receiver with seniors Raghib Ismail Jr. and C.J. Johnson, plus the “X” receiver was between junior Ayden Eberhardt and senior John Okwoli. The other “OR” on offense was at left guard, where sophomores Patrick Arnold and Eric Abojei are battling for playing time.
The fourth spot was on defense at free safety. Senior Braden Smith and redshirt freshman Rome Weber appear to be locked in battle headed into fall camp.
Running back and along the offensive line are two positions where fall camp will be key in determining who will play.
Sophomore Xazavian Valladay is the starter at running back, but he’ll get some major competition from grad transfer Trey Smith, redshirt freshman Reow Jackson, who’s returning from an injury last August during fall camp, and three incoming freshmen, who will arrive this summer.
The offensive line had multiple players in and out due to injuries in spring practice. Wyoming lost two players, guards Gavin Rush and Zach Watts, for the 2019 season due to an injury sustained this spring.
Summer off-season conditioning starts May 27. Fall camp practice will begin Friday, Aug. 2. The season opener is at home versus Missouri, Aug. 31. It was also announced Thursday, that the game against the Tigers will be under the lights at War Memorial Stadium with a start of 5:30 p.m.
