Local voters have rejected a proposed optional penny-tax, which would have provided funding for a new library in downtown Casper.

With 100 percent of the votes in Natrona County tallied, unofficial results show 16,250 votes were cast against the tax, with 15,5662 in favor. Opponents of the tax beat supporters of the new library by 588 votes. It does not appear the vote margin falls within the amount needed for a recount.

That optional tax was designed to generate about $29,000,000 for construction of a new library, and supporters say the tax would have been lifted after the needed funds were raised.
