Wyoming’s Allen and Wingard Make Prominent College Football Watch Lists
Wyoming’s Josh Allen and Andrew Wingard have both been nominated for national collegiate football awards ahead of the 2017 season.
The Maxwell Football Club announced Monday that Allen is part of the Maxwell Award Watch List, while Wingard is on the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List. Both are entering their junior season at UW.
Allen led the Mountain West in passing yards per completion (15.33), points responsible for (218) and touchdown passes (28) as a sophomore. He ranked among the top 20 in the NCAA in all three of those categories, as well. He was a Second Team All-Mountain West selection in 2016. Allen is one of three players from the Mountain West Conference on this year's list.
Wingard was semifinalist for last year’s Jim Thorpe Award, which goes to the nation’s top defensive back. He was a First Team All-MW honoree. Wingard ranked among the top 30 in total tackles (9.4 – No. 22) and solo tackles (5.4 – No.26) per game last year. He is joined by three other players from the MW on this year's watch list.
The Maxwell Award is presented to the College Player of Year each season. It’s been awarded since 1937.
The Chuck Bednarik Award is given to the College Defensive Player of the Year. It’s been presented since 1995.
Wyoming reports for Fall Camp July 30 with their first practice on July 31. The 2017 season debuts Sept. 2 at Iowa.
