A bill which would have specified the identification needed to vote in Wyoming elections has been shot down in committee.

House Bill 167 was sponsored by Rep. Lars Lone (R-Laramie County). It would have mandated Wyoming voters must have a "current, valid photo identification."

Sabrina King of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) says state law already calls for identification to vote.

Lone told the House Corporations, Elections and Political Subdivisions Committee on Thursday that when he went to vote in the last election he was given the wrong ballot, and said he hoped his bill would help prevent such mistakes.

But testimony before the committee raised concerns that some people, especially older voters, may not have the kind of ID the bill called for.

The bill was voted down by a 4-3 margin with two committee members absent
