A Wright man will spend time in prison after admitting that he tried to break into an ATM at a Casper strip mall.

18-year-old Juan Martinez will spend the next five to seven years behind bars after pleading guilty to one count of burglary in June. He was sentenced in Natrona County District Court on Friday.

Prosecutors say Martinez unsuccessfully tried to compromise an ATM at the Sunrise Shopping Center last November. Police say they were led to Martinez after learning of a similar break-in attempt in Campbell County.

Martinez eventually admitted to authorities that he was a bookkeeper for a drug dealer. Police believe the funds would have been used to fund the dealer’s operation.

Martinez told police that the heist was eventually scrapped when he and an accomplice realized that they were taking too much time.

Martinez will receive credit for 216 days already served. He will also be required to pay $287.62 in restitution.

The sentence will run concurrently with a similar sentence out of Campbell County. Martinez will be sentenced in Campbell County next week.
