WORLAND, Wyo. (AP) — The Washakie County Sheriff's Department says scammers are calling Worland businesses demanding hundreds of dollars for bogus utility bills.

Sheriff Steve Rakness tells the Northern Wyoming Daily News (http://tinyurl.com/ofmhqm) the calls started Wednesday. He says several businesses have been targeted but none fell for the ruse.

Rakness says the callers are threatening to cut off the businesses' electricity if an overdue bill isn't paid immediately. The callers try to get the business to buy a pre-paid credit card.

Sheriff's investigator Celia Easton says in one case the scammer gave a Wyoming call-back number, but the calls are probably being routed to another number, possibly in another country.

Easton says investigators may never find the perpetrators.
