Man Convicted of Attempted Murder in Cheyenne Shooting

A 51-year-old Fremont, Nebraska man is facing 20 years to life in prison after a Laramie County jury on Friday found him guilty of attempted second-degree murder.

Court records say Timothy Leners tried to kill Christopher Trout by pushing him to the ground, straddling him and shooting him once in the chest with a 9mm handgun.

The shooting occurred shortly before 8 p.m. on Dec. 23, 2017, outside an apartment in northeast Cheyenne.

Trout was taken to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, where he told police that he got into a shoving match with Leners following an argument about Leners pursuing a relationship with his wife.

Leners was also facing a single count of aggravated assault and battery-bodily injury with weapon, but the District Attorney's Office dismissed the charge on Thursday, three days into Leners' trial.

Leners' sentencing date will be set as soon as a presentence investigation is complete.
