Cowgirls Defeat South Dakota, 4-1

LARAMIE -- The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team made it three consecutive wins Friday afternoon, winning 4-1 at home over South Dakota. The Cowgirls, who have now won 5-of-6, improved to 3-1 at home this season.

“I thought once again, we played really good doubles structure today, with our style and that was the clincher for us to get the doubles point,” said Head Coach Dean Clower afterwards.

“I thought our heart is why we won this match. We didn’t play great tennis, but we found a way and that’s what good teams do. Kudos to South Dakota, they came out really hard and they’ve got a lot of talent. That team is going to go far this year.”

The Cowgirls (6-4) opened the match by winning the doubles point for the sixth-straight match. Wyoming got wins at the first and second spots and was leading handily at No. 3 before the point was clinched. At No. 1, Violetta Borodina and Sophie Zehender continued their torrid start to the dual season, improving to 8-0 in duals. The duo was victorious, 6-1. At the second spot, Noesjka Brink and Nikol Dobrilova won, 6-4.

In singles, Zehender clinched the match with her third-set victory Friday. Zehender won at the No. 1 spot, 6-4, 4-6 and 6-1 to win the day for the Cowgirls. Wyoming also picked up a pair of straight-set wins against the Coyotes, winning at Nos. 2 and 3. At No. 2, Noesjka Brink won 6-2 and 6-1 while at three, Borodina came out on top also, 6-2 and 6-1.

UW will look to win four in-a-row and close-out another perfect weekend as it hosts Idaho Saturday at noon.
