Cowgirl Tennis Splits Saturday in Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Ky., – The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team split a pair of matches Saturday in the Bluegrass state. The Cowgirls opened the day with a 4-1 win over Illinois Chicago in a neutral-site match. UW finished the day with a 4-3 loss at Western Kentucky.

The Cowgirls (8-5) lost the doubles point in both matches Saturday, snapping their streak of winning the doubles point in seven consecutive matches. Sophie Zehender and Noesjka Brink both went 2-0 in singles on the day at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively. Zehender won against UIC, 7-5 and 6-4. Against Western Kentucky, Zehender came out on top 6-3, 6-2.

Brink, meanwhile, won 6-2, 6-2 against the Flames and then followed that up with a 6-3 and 6-4 win against WKU in the nightcap. Against UIC, Jeselle Ante (No. 5) and Lucia Malinak (No. 6) also earned singles wins. Ante won 7-5, 6-2 while Malinak won 6-0 and 7-5. Nikol Dobrilova was the third singles win in the loss to Western Kentucky. Dobrilova won at No. 4, 6-3 and 6-4.

“I thought we came out and were ready to play against UIC,” said Head Coach Dean Clower after the first match of the day.

“I give a lot of credit to UIC for winning the doubles point, they took it from us. Our response after doubles was Cowgirl Style. Winning 5-of-6 first sets in physical fashion is no small task.”

Wyoming is now off for the rest of February and will return to action March 6-8 with three matches in three days. The Cowgirls will make their annual trek to McComb, Mississippi where they will face South Alabama, West Alabama and SE Louisiana.
