Cowboy Golfers Look to Defend Desert Intercollegiate Title

LARAMIE -- The Wyoming Cowboy golfers continue their spring campaign hosting the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Tuesday, February 6 to Thursday, Feb. 8.

The three-day event at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif. Features a very competitive 17 team field and marks the tournament’s 16th year.

The Cowboys won the event for the first-time last season. UW finished with a 54-hole total of 857 (-7). Wyoming had six individuals finish in the Top 25 of the tournament field of 90 collegiate golfers. Jaren Calkins was UW's top finisher, tying for fourth place at 213 (-3).

Wyoming is coming off a strong opening tournament of the spring at the Arizona N.I.T. that saw the Pokes shot a season-best -11 as a team. Jimmy Dales led the way for Wyoming finished the tournament with a pair of 69 (-3) in the final two rounds to finish 33rd in one of the top tournaments in college golf.

It was the first tournament of the spring season for the Cowboys, and they faced a tournament field that included seven teams ranked in the Top 50 NCAA Division I teams in the country and another six teams ranked in the Top 100 for a total of 13 ranked teams in the field of 18 total teams.

Top Teams

This season a new “College Golf Ranking System” sanctioned by the NCAA has been established. In the most recent men’s golf team rankings Released. Charlotte comes in ranking No. 48 in this week’s poll to round out teams in the top 50. Wyoming is ranked No. 146. Cal State Fullerton is also in the top-100 at No. 88 with Grand Canyon at No. 104.
