Wyoming’s shortage of women in its statehouse is a well-chronicled one despite being the first in the nation to guarantee women unconditional suffrage 150 years ago.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports that since Mary Bellamy became Wyoming’s first female lawmaker 119 years ago, Wyoming has elected just 132 women to the statehouse.

That's a small fraction of the more than 1,900 individuals to pass through the Capitol.

Wyoming’s representation of women in the Legislature is third lowest in the nation.

Former female legislators say an overabundance of male perspectives risks excluding perspectives necessary to craft laws that consider everyone’s interests equally.
