After years of relying on part-time and on-call firefighters, six new, permanent, full-time firefighters have started work with the Evansville Fire Department.

Evansville officials say, starting Monday, the firefighters will work a series of 48-hour shifts with other department staff.

Evansville mayor Phil Hinds says, with the town’s booming growth, the need for a staffing overhaul at the fire department was significant.

Our ambulance calls have more than doubled and our fire calls have more than doubled,” Hinds said. “It became necessary that we have a full-time fire department.”

Hinds says the town will still utilize its part-time and volunteer staff to complement the new full-time professionals. The town will raise ambulance fees to offset the cost of the new firefighters.
