An attorney for the Cheyenne man accused of beating and sexually abusing his girlfriend's two-year-old son prior to his death has filed for a continuance in the case.

John Barrett, 24, was scheduled to appear Thursday morning in Laramie County Circuit Court, but his preliminary hearing has been rescheduled for July 7 at 1:30 p.m.

Barrett has been charged with two counts of child abuse and first-degree sexual abuse of minor.

Police were notified of the case on May 22 when the child was brought to the hospital with two blacks eyes and extensive bruising on his body.

The child was transferred to Children's Hospital Colorado where he died the next day.

Police continue to investigate the case. They say additional charges could be filed against Barrett.

Barrett is being held in the Laramie County Jail on $50,000 cash bond. He could face 25 to 70 years in prison if convicted.
