A statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee that towered over Richmond, Virginia, for generations has been taken down, cut into pieces and hauled away.

The city announced its plans to hoist away the statues Friday after a long legal fight held up the removal plans for years.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports 36-year-old Harry H. Rogers was convicted Monday of six misdemeanors and sentenced to a year in jail for each charge.

Northam last week ordered the statue of Lee taken down.

Many activists and black leaders say it is long overdue.

The move comes a day after tens of thousands of gun-rights activists rallied peacefully at the state Capitol.
