A Casper woman will avoid prison time after admitting she mishandled a gun and shot her husband.

Stephanie Lutnes was sentenced to one year of unsupervised probation, after she pleaded guilty to one amended misdemeanor charge of reckless endangerment.

Investigators with the Casper Police Department say in early December 2015, Lutnes had to walk home from a bar, because her husband left without her.

When she arrived home, she found her husband laying on the bed and his handgun was nearby.

Lutnes said she woke him up and yelled at him to get rid of the gun, then tried to hand it to him when it went off and a bullet stuck him in the thigh.

She added that she had never used guns before, because they give her anxiety.

Lutnes was originally facing several felony charges in connection to the shooting, but her husband told the court that the shooting was an accident and requested that the charges be dropped.

Prosecutors eventually decided to amended the charges to the one misdemeanor.
