A 60-year-old Cheyenne man is facing a felony charge after reportedly throwing a large machete at a police officer.

According to arrest records, Mark Romain Dunn was arrested at 1:08 a.m. on Friday, March 15, after a police officer was called to the North College Drive overpass over Interstate 80 for a male in the road swinging a piece of metal and dancing in the street.

The officer says he was driving toward Dunn and was not far from him when Dunn threw a four- to five-foot-long machete at him and his vehicle.

Cheyenne Police Use Less-Than-Lethal Round to Stop Machete-Wielding Man

When backup arrived, the officer reportedly had Dunn at gunpoint on the overpass and Dunn was swinging around the machete and not listening to the officer's commands to drop it.

Police say more officers arrived on the scene, but Dunn continued to not listen to them and refused to drop the machete, so a contact team was formed.

When officers approached Dunn, he reportedly came at two of them with the machete.

He finally surrendered after being shot with a 40mm less-than-lethal round.

Police say Dunn was rambling incoherently, could not stop moving, and appeared to be under the influence of a stimulant.

He was taken to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center by ambulance where he was medically cleared, and then booked into the Laramie County Detention Center.

Machete-Wielding Man Charged With Felony

Dunn was subsequently charged with causing or attempting to cause bodily injury to a peace officer, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

He was also charged with being under the influence of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor.

Dunn was also served on Friday with a Laramie County Circuit Court warrant for probation violation on original charges of battery and possession of a controlled substance in powder form.

His bond was set at $5,000 cash and his preliminary and probation revocation hearings were scheduled for March 27 at 2 p.m.
