WyoPreps Athlete of the Week Award Goes to Skier and Three Wrestlers: 2-28-24 [VIDEOS]

A state champion skier and three four-time state champion wrestlers earned the Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Wyoming WyoPreps Athlete of the Week honors for Feb. 28, 2024. Natrona County’s Ally Wheeler swept both races at the Nordic skiing state championships for the girls’ honor. The boys’ award is shared between wrestlers Antonio Avila, Kale Knezovich, and Broc Fletcher. These were based on performances from Feb. 19 through Feb. 24, 2024.

Wheeler dominated the girls’ races at the 2024 Wyoming High School Nordic Skiing State Championships. She won both races for the second straight year and by wide margins. The junior captured first place in the 5km freestyle race by over 1:12. She followed that with an even more dominant victory in the 10km classic, which she won by almost 2:45.

WyoPreps spoke with Wheeler earlier this week. She discussed skiing on the home course, how the conditions were, her performance on Friday compared to Saturday, and more.

Last Saturday in Casper, three high school wrestlers joined an elite club with their fourth wrestling state championship. They are Antonio Avila of Thunder Basin in Class 4A at 144 pounds, Green River’s Kale Knezovich in Class 3A at 157, and Broc Fletcher from Rock Springs in Class 4A at 138. All of them won their state title in the final match of their prep career and became four-time state champions. Only 30 wrestlers in state history have accomplished that feat.

WyoPreps caught up with Avila, Knezovich, and Fletcher to recap their exceptional victories. We discussed how it feels to be a four-time champ, what their strategy was, their state tournament broken down by round, and that feeling after the fourth title last Saturday night.
