As part of National Public Lands Day, the largest single day volunteer effort for public lands, Yellowstone National Park is seeking volunteers for two work projects that will occur in the Lamar Valley on Saturday, September 26. The National Park Service will also waive park entrance fees in honor of National Public Lands Day.

Volunteers will participate in either trail restoration work on the Specimen Ridge Trail located near Lamar Valley or staining picnic tables and signs at various locations. Work will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and includes obliterating social trails, planting native vegetation, and painting/staining picnic tables and other structures. The work is strenuous, requiring the use shovels, picks and other hand tools, lifting rocks and bags of rock, and working at high altitudes and in variable weather conditions.

Space is limited to 30 people and volunteers should register by September 21. To register, please email your name, phone numbers, and choice of project to YELL_Volunteer_Office@nps.gov or call 307-344-2729 and leave a voice mail with your name and phone number.

Drinks and snacks will be provided. All volunteers should bring lunch, water, sunscreen, and sturdy footwear. Weather is unpredictable and can be cold and blustery in late September, so bring clothing suitable for a range of conditions.

National Public Lands Day partners with five federal land management agencies to provide a special thank you to volunteers. Volunteers who participate in a National Public Lands Day activity will receive a coupon good for a one-time free entrance to the federal public lands day area of their choice.
