The Casper Police Department recently made residents aware of a scam that was designed to extort money from a Casper community member.

Scammers are trying to take advantage of the data breach with various email phishing scams, claiming to be from Equifax and asking people to provide personal information.

The scammers are apparently using the phony attack warning as an attention-getter to spread the scam post on Facebook.

The post goes on to say that the sheriff's office will never ask people for personal information or to make any kind of payment over the phone.

If the intended victim doesn't hang up, the caller asks for driver's license info as well as social security numbers insurance information, and other sensitive personal details.

Taxpayers are encouraged not to engage potential scammers online or on the phone.

In some parts of the country, con artists are going door-to-door selling phony test kits.

The National Center for Disaster Fraud has a hotline that receives and enters complaints into a centralized system.

Nationwide in 2019, consumers reported losing over $1.9 billion to fraud.

The messages are a scam, and people are being urged to delete them.
