The Gillette Police Department has released the name of the man who allegedly, while drunk, forced his way into the wrong apartment and was rebuffed by the resident wielding a samurai sword. The incident happened at about 10:30 pm, November 19th.
Samurai sword thwarts invader:
Text: "The man grabbed a samurai sword from a closet because the man was trying to get into the apartment. When the resident opened the door to investigate, the 21-year-old man, Matthew James Adler, forced his way into the residence. The two men struggled over the samurai sword and the 21-year-old suspect recieved severe lacerations that required medical treatment."
Lt. Brent Wasson, of the Gillette Police, was asked if the law allows someone to use deadly force to protect people, but not property.
Use of deadly force:
Text: "Correct, you have to be in fear for your life or someone else's. We are seeking no charges for the resident of the house."
Wasson said Adler was charged with misdemeanor home invasion and the case was still pending as of the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
