SEE: One Of The Oldest Operating Post Offices In Wyoming
Wyoming is as rural as it gets for a state in the lower 48. That means getting the mail can be - interesting.
In the video below, this lady takes us to her post office in Western Wyoming. She has to take a long drive every time. It might be the oldest running rural post office in the Cowboy State. Her post office box is in Cora, Wyoming.
Cora, Wyoming, is a historic, unincorporated rural community and census-designated place located in Sublette County, tucked against the spectacular backdrop of the Wind River Mountain Range. With an elevation of 7,396 feet and a tiny population of roughly 56 residents, Cora is recognized as the oldest remaining unincorporated community in the county.
The Cora Post Office, serving the Upper Green River Valley, was officially established in the 1890s (some reports indicate 1887 or early 1890s) and remains a vital, historic community hub today. Originally located at the Noble Ranch, it was moved to its current site in 1919.
Watch her post office video below.
The building is constructed of hand-hewn logs transported from the Upper Green River.
In the early 20th century, mail was delivered by dog sled during the winter, serving the isolated ranchers in the region. Those ranchers are still isolated today, but it is much easier to get around.
It has always been typical in rural Wyoming that a post office was often the only institution needed for a place to be considered a town, with the postmaster often being the sole resident.
The office is not like any that you typically see in our modern world. It has a central meeting place, featuring local historic memorabilia and, at one point, an unmarked door leading directly into the postmaster's living room.
This post office was slated for closure by the U.S. Postal Service in 2011, but residents protested for its retention as a vital community icon.
The Cora townsite was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.
The post office has endured for over a century despite its remote location, with early mail sometimes carried on a gray stallion to Big Piney, a 70-mile round trip.
