Where Is the Oldest House in Wyoming?
Here's an interesting question to look up on your search engine.
What is the oldest house in Wyoming? By that, we mean that it is still standing. Still being used. Not something abandoned and falling apart.
The answer, if this is correct, is not what I thought it was going to be.
Old Bedlam, located at the Fort Laramie National Historic Site, is the oldest standing building in Wyoming, built in 1849 to serve as bachelor officers' quarters. It served as a post headquarters and a hub for army administration.
Okay, but that says building. I tried the search again because I wanted the oldest HOUSE!
There is the claim that the World's Oldest Building is the Fossil Cabin at Como Bluff, Wyoming. It's made from Dinosaur bones. But any homemade of stone would be older than those bones, so that claim is not true.
The only other answer that came up is the Taliaferro House: A historic home in Sweetwater County, which has been in the same family since 1914.
The Taliaferro House, located in Rock Springs, Sweetwater County, Wyoming, is a National Register-listed property built between 1907 and 1912. Constructed from local sandstone by an Italian stonemason, this residence is a premier example of the American Foursquare style, situated in an early 20th-century residential neighborhood.
Built between 1907 and 1912 using sandstone sourced from quarries south of Rock Springs. It was constructed by an Italian stonemason. The home represents a prominent, elite residential home from Rock Springs' early development period.
Augustine Kendall had the Taliaferro House built. He was president of the Sweetwater County Bank, Vice-President and Treasurer of the Rock Springs Lumber Company, and was involved in the Stock Growers Mercantile and sheep and cattle ranching in Sweetwater County. He also served as Mayor of Rock Springs 1904-1907 and was one of the original founders of the Rock Springs Grazing Association.
