Three Schools Join the Latest WyoPreps Basketball Rankings

The more of the season that goes by, the more things stay the same. The new WyoPreps Coaches and Media Basketball Polls didn’t change much from last week. Sure, there was some shuffling, and a couple of new teams made their debut, but overall, the polls have seen most of the same teams for a majority of the 2024 season.

The Wind River girls and Encampment boys jumped into the polls, and Buffalo returned to the 3A boys’ ranks for the first time since mid-December.

The Cougars are the new No. 5 team in the girls’ Class 2A poll this week. A 3-0 start to conference play vaulted Wind River into the top five for the first time this season. The top four remained the same. Tongue River was at the top with 13 of the 17 first-place votes. The other four went to Wyoming Indian, who was second. Sundance and Lingle-Ft. Laramie held in third and fourth, respectively.

In 3A, Mountain View dropped two spots, which moved two other schools up one spot apiece. Douglas was still No. 1 with 20 of the 22 first-place votes. Buffalo followed in second and scored the other two first-place votes. Powell climbed to third, and Pinedale moved up to fourth. The Buffalos fell to fifth.

Class 1A girls saw Burlington and Little Snake River flip-flop. Cokeville maintained the top spot with all but one first-place vote. Upton and Southeast were second and third. The Huskies moved up to fourth, and the Rattlers fell to fifth.

There was no change in the 4A girls’ poll this week. Cheyenne East was at No. 1 with 14 of the 21 first-place votes. Cody kept the second position and earned four first-place votes. Campbell County picked up three first-place nods and stayed third. Sheridan and Laramie rounded out the poll again.

For the second straight week, a new team debuted in the Class 1A boys’ rankings. The Encampment Tigers were that squad. Upton was still No. 1 with 12 of the 13 first-place votes. Cokeville’s win last week over Saratoga pushed them up to second. Saratoga fell to third. Farson-Eden kept the fourth spot. Encampment moved into fifth.

Class 3A saw Buffalo rejoin the top five. Powell tightened its grip at the top. The Panthers received 16 of the 22 first-place votes. Douglas was second, Lovell was third, and Pinedale was fourth. The Bison narrowly slid into the fifth position over five other schools.

Class 2A nearly saw a tie for first, but Lingle-Ft. Laramie held the top spot by six points in the voting. Despite only four first-place votes, it was the second-place votes that kept the Doggers No. 1. Tongue River maintained second. Wright moved back up to third. The top three teams were separated by only 12 points in the balloting. Wyoming Indian dropped back to fourth, and Big Horn held at No. 5.

Just like the girls’ poll, the top five stayed the same in 4A boys. Cheyenne Central was a unanimous choice this week for No. 1 with all 19 first-place votes. They are followed by Laramie. Despite their first loss last week, Natrona County held third. Cheyenne East was fourth, and Sheridan came in fifth.
